![]() I already have The Great Reddit Reading List to work through and frankly, it’s going to take me a very long time to do that. I will say up front that I’m not planning to make a series of posts about this. Naturally, I was hooked at once! And so, I assembled a list of authors and books, using the article I linked above, and set out to dip my toes in this particular forgotten pool of science-fiction. Unlike most literary awards, it’s not an award for a particular book it’s for the author, and so various works by each author may fall under this umbrella. This award, founded in 2001, exists to recognize and promote some of the great science-fiction authors of the past, who may have fallen out of print and out of common knowledge. ![]() To that end, I recently discovered the existence of the Cordwainer Smith Rediscovery Award. It’s not that I have anything against them it’s just that I’m so far behind on great books of the past that I’ll never catch up!īut I’m not alone in this, nor in my love for–especially–classic science fiction. ![]() There’s a good reason for that: I rarely read new or very recent books. ![]() If you’ve been with me for awhile–or at least long enough to know me for book reviews–you may have noticed that I rarely cover new or very recent books. ![]() ![]() ![]() To save her world, Jena will be tested in ways she can't imagine-tests of trust, strength, and true love. From the Hardcover edition. While most of ‘the strays’ are artists, Eva’s best friend, Lily joins the group, first at age 8 just for companionship, but then as a housemate when her family circumstances change. The Strays of the title in the debut novel from Australian novelist Emily Bitto are a group of people who gather around artist Evan Trentham, his independently wealthy wife, Helena, and their three daughters: Bea, Eva and Heloise. “The night that followed was a slip down the rabbit hole.” ![]() ![]() ![]() This is such a good question and obviously it’s one that I’ve been thinking about so much during the pandemic. What does community mean to you? What role does it play (if any) in providing an antidote to the self-obsession your essays explore? Even though the book centers “self,” there are, of course, examples of community everywhere - from the church to devoted Barre class acolytes to the social circle that sent you to all those weddings. These responses have been edited and condensed for clarity. ![]() You’ll find a selection of her answers below. In “Trick Mirror,” she considers how the rise of social media has affected our identities, as well as many facets of our economy and society. In the civil war that follows, the forces of Mark Antony and Octavius Caesar eventually win out over the armies of Cassius and Brutus. After Caesar is assassinated, Mark Antony cleverly turns the crowd against the conspirators in one of the most famous speeches in literature. In addition to its compelling insights into the human condition, Julius Caesar is also superb drama, as Brutus, Cassius, and the other conspirators hatch a plot to overthrow Caesar, dictator of Rome. So clearly and urgently does it impact its insights into history and human behavior, Julius Caesar is traditionally among the first of Shakespeare's plays to be studied at the secondary-school level. Presented for the first time in 1599, the play reveals the great dramatist's consummate ability to explore and express the most profound human emotions and instincts. ![]() Based on Plutarch's account of the lives of Brutus, Julius Caesar, and Mark Antony, Julius Caesar was the first of Shakespeare's Roman history plays. ![]() ![]() ![]() © 2023 Charles Schwab & Co., Inc, All rights reserved. ![]() Learn more about our services for non-U.S. residents are subject to country-specific restrictions.
