Through his work, he brought thousands of trans people together across the country and helped create and preserve trans history for generations to come. He fought the medical system to officially recognize “female-to-gay males,” and in 1986 founded FTM, one of the first organizations for the FTM community he was also a founding member of San Francisco’s GLBT Historical Society, now host to one of the largest queer historical archives in the United States. He was an activist whose writing, public speaking, and community leadership helped establish sexual and gender identity as two distinct concepts in the public mind and rallied the female-to-male community at a time when it didn’t yet exist. Lou Sullivan was many things: a typesetter, historian, bird lover, cruising connoisseur, and arguably one of the first publicly gay trans men. It’s ironic that much of the work Lou Sullivan did for the trans male community is often lost to an endless scroll of shirtless selfies from his modern contemporaries.

I receive messages from people in all walks of life, telling me that rediscovering their creativity has had a positive effect on them. Eight years on and I’ve published 10 books, which have sold 21 million copies around the world. Being creative seemed to melt stress and boost smiles. I loved the somewhat crazy idea that grown-ups should take a few minutes out of their busy days, put down their smartphones and pick up the colouring pencils. Back in 2013, I published Secret Garden, a colouring book for adults. I’ve been championing creativity as a tool to boost wellbeing for years. Creativity is a daily practice that helps lift my mood and allows me to process tough things it nourishes my soul, calms the chaos and generally makes me a better human. Self care looks different for each of us, but for me it looks like pencils and pens. Some people meditate, others find inner peace tackling the ironing pile. My beta readers are so generous with their time and they aren’t afraid to kick my ass when I need it.įor this book, there is one person in particular who helped me beyond measure. The friends I’ve made in this community are ones that I know I will have for life. It goes beyond those who are paid to help me with my work, though. I have a whole team behind me who are as invested in my stories as I am and I couldn’t be more indebted their hard work and patience. Fast forward four years and writing and publishing is more fun than I ever imagined it could be. It wasn’t until I was nearly finished the manuscript that I let my husband and sister in on the fact that I was writing. I wrote in my living room with the lights off after my husband had gone to bed. When I began this journey, it was a solitary endeavor. Since I started publishing four years ago, they haven’t lost a single ounce of thrill, but more than that, with each book that is released, I am more and more grateful that this is my actual life. Release days are always filled with excitement for me. Thank you so much to The Novel Approach for hosting me today on release day for A Fallen Heart! The collective’s table was filled with zines and literature about LGBTQ+ topics and experiences, which were available for purchase on a pay-what-you-can basis. Seriously I imagine said author sitting in the study having wrote the whole book and thinking "humm how shall this end.?" "awful?" "YES! it shall be awful!" Then they spent the next two weeks making sure it was perfectly A W E F U L. It was about 5 hours toooo long and in my humble opinion had the most unsatisfying ending the author could possibly think of. I actually quite enjoyed many parts throughout.
